'Leeds Acts Together' campaign launches

A social media campaign has been launched by Leeds Climate Commission working with organisations and individuals across Leeds to promote climate action by local businesses and organisations.

It follows the themes of  BBC Radio 5 Live's coverage of local climate action, called Leeds: City on a Mission, and will amplify the issues through a parallel but independent social media presence. 

New Leeds solar and insulation scheme launches for low-income homeowners

Eligible residents will be able to install energy saving technology—including solar panels, cavity wall insulation and, in some areas, external wall insulation—completely free of charge.
Leeds City Council has secured £5.6m from the Government’s Green Homes Grant Local Authority Delivery Scheme, to make nearly 685 of the city’s coldest homes healthier, warmer, and cheaper with energy saving measures. The work supports the council’s efforts both to reduce fuel poverty and tackle climate change and will be carried out in partnership with Better Homes Yorkshire. 

5 Live puts national focus on local climate action in Leeds: City on a Mission

BBC Radio 5 Live is launching a new year-long project that will follow the city of Leeds in its efforts to cut carbon emissions.

Leeds has pledged to be carbon neutral by 2030. BBC Radio 5 Live will follow families, business people, campaigners, and local leaders for a year as they seek to make the changes needed to deliver a greener future for the city.

New film created for climate commission launch

A new film to launch the Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission - PCAN's newest (and biggest) addition to our growing network of commissions - premiered yesterday (17 March) to an online audience of more than 400 people.

The film, presented by BBC Meteorologist Paul Hudson, sets out the climate change challenge for the sprawling region and showcases a range of inspirational "success stories" from organisations and groups.

An independent advisory group, set up to support ambitious climate action in Yorkshire and the Humber, has launched today, 17 March.

The Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission brings together a team of climate leaders from across the public, private and third sectors, in the largest regional Commission of its kind in the UK.

New city centre trees take root

A major milestone has been hit on the Connecting Leeds Headrow scheme as the first trees have been planted on Dortmund Square.

The semi-mature trees, which were planted by Leeds City Council’s parks and countryside team, are the first of over 30 which will be planted across the scheme. There will be a net gain of approximately 90 trees once all three city centre projects are complete next year.

The Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission, which is set to launch formally in March, will provide an independent voice to help support and track the delivery of ambitious climate actions across the region.

Climate Commission shows moving to net-zero emissions can help Leeds’ post-Covid recovery

Taking action on climate change could save Leeds £651m per year and create 1,500 jobs for the next decade, a new report has revealed. 

These social and economic benefits could be a central part of the city’s post-Covid recovery plans says the Leeds Climate Commission, which has produced a Net-Zero Carbon Roadmap for Leeds. It shows how the city can achieve its ambition of net-zero emissions by 2030 with many positive benefits for health, equality, travel, housing and the environment.
